FB2 Reader Firefox

FB2 Reader

Allows reading FictionBook (.fb2 and fb2.zip) files from websites. Just click on fb2 link and that is it. Only works for unzipped local .fb2 files. For Linux support please see the description.

Features & Capabilities

FB2 Reader is a lightweight Chrome extension that opens unzipped local FictionBook (.fb2) files directly from websites. It supports links, images, footnotes, a table of contents, and tables, and can handle zipped books online.

Firefox integration brings bookmarks, Ctrl+F search, font size and typeface customization, printing, and user styles via Stylus. Linux users can read local .fb2 files by setting the FB2 mime type to text/xml (see issue 8 for details). Note: Only unzipped local .fb2 files are supported.

User Reviews

FB2 Reader is valued for letting you view FB2 files in Firefox with a lightweight, fast UI. Reviews emphasize it as one of the few FB2 readers available as a Firefox extension and note its usefulness even in beta, including local FB2.zip support. However, reliability dips after Firefox updates, with instances of the extension stopping or the icon graying out. Users also miss basic customization options (font/size/color) and report encoding problems with UTF-8 BOM. Overall, it’s handy but has notable stability and UX caveats.
Pros
  • Allows viewing FB2 files directly in Firefox (including local FB2.zip support)
  • Minimalist, distraction-free design with fast performance
  • Functional and useful even though in beta
  • One of the few Firefox extensions that enable FB2 reading
  • Particularly valued by Linux users as a readable FB2 option
Cons
  • Stops working or becomes unavailable after Firefox updates (reliability issue)
  • Lacks user customization options (no font, size, or color theme controls)
  • UTF-8 with BOM encoding issues reported by users requiring manual workarounds
