User Reviews
Users commonly praise OpenCloud for speed, simplicity, and its appeal as a lightweight, self-hosted cloud alternative. Repeated requests include dark mode, more flexible uploads (including folders and custom photo-upload locations), and the ability to download files to a chosen device folder. Some users also found backend setup challenging.
Pros
- Fast and responsive, with multiple users describing the app or service as snappy.
- Clean, simple, easy-to-use Android app.
- Works well and is seen as a lightweight alternative to Nextcloud or Google Drive.
- Self-hosting gives users more control and independence from major cloud providers.
Cons
- Dark mode is missing, a complaint repeated by several users.
- Upload options are limited: users want folder uploads and the ability to choose custom folders for automatic uploads.
- Users want to download files directly to a chosen phone folder, such as Downloads.
- Getting the backend set up can take time or be more difficult than expected.
Recent reviews
The desktop side works fine, but the Android app advertises automatic photo upload and then cannot see the folder my camera actually writes to. My photos are not in DCIM/Camera and there is nowhere in the app to point the uploader somewhere else. Folder selection has been an open request since December. Manual upload works perfectly, so the app can clearly read my media, it just will not do the one thing it says it does. Nextcloud has handled this for years.
