ESTA Application Guide is an easy-to-understand application that introduces the application process, required documents, and travel conditions for visas and the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) system required for entry into the United States.

・Who is eligible to apply for ESTA?

Those who intend to stay in the U.S. for tourism or short-term business for 90 days or less are eligible to apply for ESTA.
ESTA was introduced in January 2009 under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries are exempt from visa application by obtaining ESTA, and DHS strongly recommends that you apply for ESTA online at least 72 hours prior to departure. Please note that if you do not obtain a "travel authorization" under ESTA in advance, you will be denied boarding the aircraft and entry into the United States.
ESTA is valid for two years from the date of acquisition, and you will be required to reapply when you travel to the U.S. after the expiration date.

・Who is eligible to apply for a visa?

Those who wish to travel to the U.S. for purposes other than tourism or short-term business, or those who wish to stay in the U.S. for more than 90 days must obtain a visa.
Unlike ESTA, a visa requires the submission of multiple documents and an interview with a consular officer. It also takes more than one month to be issued, so early preparation is necessary. There are various types of visas depending on the purpose of travel, such as B1 for short-term business, B2 for tourism, F1 for study abroad, H for employment, and J1 for homestay. Select the appropriate visa based on your purpose and length of stay, and prepare your application several months in advance of your planned travel date.
The visa validity period depends on the type of visa and the conditions of the applicant, and is in principle left to the discretion of the consular officer.
