User Reviews

Users like the add-on’s clean UI, usefulness, and broad emoji coverage, but several reviews repeatedly complain it’s outdated (missing newer emojis), lacks variant/flag options, and inserts colon-style shortcodes instead of Unicode, which breaks compatibility on social sites. Many praise it but recommend updating or choosing a maintained alternative.
Pros
  • Clean, easy-to-use UI and helpful emoji guide — users find it practical and well-designed.
  • Reliable in daily use; several reviewers say it works well and they use it frequently.
  • Good overall emoji coverage for many common needs (some say ~99% of what they want).
  • Some users prefer it to other extensions and appreciate the author’s work.
Cons
  • App has been left unmaintained/rarely updated — multiple reviewers note missing newer emojis.
  • Emojis are inserted as shortcodes (e.g. :this:) rather than Unicode, causing incompatibility with sites like Twitter and other social platforms.
  • Lacks newer emoji variants and features (skin-tone/other diversity options, some flags or platform-specific styles like iOS emojis).

I wish it was still updated but as you can see on github it's been radio silence in 8 years unfortunately, I prefer this to other extensions but it's worth considering an alternative now that this has been left behind. The biggest issue is I'm used to iOS emojis and have a much easier time looking for them, I don't see anyone else offering a valuable alternative.
