Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 - 18 April 1955) was a German-based theoretical physicist. He developed the theory of relativity (along with quantum mechanics), one of the two pillars of modern physics. 274 Einstein's work has influenced the philosophy of science. Einstein is best known in popular culture for his mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (known as "the world's most famous equation"). He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his "contributions to theoretical physics," in particular the invention of the photoelectric effect, an important step in the evolution of quantum theory.

 Near the beginning of his career, Einstein felt that Newtonian mechanics was no longer sufficient to match the laws of classical mechanics with the laws of electromagnetic field. This led to the development of his theory of special relativity. However, he realized that the principle of relativity could be extended to gravitational fields as well, and in 1916 he published an essay on general relativity with the theory of gravity. He continued to deal with the problems of statistical mechanics and quantum theory, leading to the theory of particle theory and molecular motion. They also investigated the thermal properties of light, which laid the foundation of light photon theory. In 1917, Einstein applied the theory of relativity to form a large-scale structure of the universe.
