mPING Android

mPING

Crowd sourcing weather reports for NWS and NSSL/CIMMS research.

Features & Capabilities

mPING is a citizen science Chrome extension enabling users to crowdsource weather observations to support research by the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). Volunteers of all ages report precipitation types including rain, snow, hail, and their variations, helping refine algorithms that utilize dual-polarization NEXRAD radar data.

By submitting real-time reports on precipitation near the ground, users assist scientists in overcoming radar limitations and enhancing detection accuracy. The extension encourages participation from individuals, classrooms, and families across the U.S., contributing vital data for weather research and algorithm development focused on winter precipitation and thunderstorm hail size.

User Reviews

mPING is a popular app among weather enthusiasts and volunteers for reporting localized weather conditions that contribute valuable data to meteorologists. It is praised for its simplicity, community engagement, and ability to provide real-time, localized weather information. However, multiple users report significant technical issues including crashes and startup failures on newer Android devices, and the app has not been updated for several years. Users also desire more detailed reporting options and better user account features to track their own reports.
Pros
  • Useful for real-time weather reporting by citizens to the National Weather Service.
  • Engaging and fun for weather enthusiasts and citizen scientists.
  • Provides valuable localized weather information that can be more accurate than news or official stations.
  • Simple and easy to submit weather reports.
  • Allows users to see weather reports submitted by others on a map, enhancing situational awareness.
Cons
  • Frequent startup issues and crashes, especially on newer Android versions (e.g., Android 15) and some recent phone models.
  • App freezes on loading with a persistent 'Please wait' screen and spinning progress indicator.
  • Lack of updates and maintenance since 2020 leading to outdated functionality and reliability problems.
  • Insufficient reporting options, particularly for snow-only conditions and detailed weather phenomena (e.g., no granular snow or rain intensity options).
  • No user account/login feature to view or manage report history and add notes to observations.

I'm not sure about this app. It seems like a good thing to try and give weather updates. The problem is that the interface does not fit itself to the useable area of the screen.

This app has always been reliable and simple to use with a very small memory footprint. After upgrading to a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, I get a message that the app is not compatible & to try again after the developer updates the app for compatibility. PLEASE RESOLVE! Thank YOU for all you do as a service for weather safety to the public!!
