By: Peuj
Detects and automatically closes duplicate tabs.

Features & Capabilities

Duplicate Tabs Closer is a powerful Chrome extension designed to detect and automatically close duplicate browser tabs to keep your workspace organized and efficient. It offers customizable detection settings such as ignoring URL case, 'www' prefixes, and URL parts like hash or search queries. Users can define whitelist URLs and set tab priority rules to decide which duplicates to keep. The extension supports various scopes including active windows or all windows, as well as container-aware detection.

With options to automatically close duplicates, activate remaining tabs, or apply tab behavior after closing, this extension maximizes your control over tab management. It also features customizable badge colors to indicate the number of duplicates and supports a hotkey (Alt+Shift+W) to close all duplicate tabs quickly. Whether you want silent cleaning or notification-based monitoring, Duplicate Tabs Closer streamlines your browsing experience effectively.

User Reviews

Users generally praise the add-on for effectively reducing tab clutter and boosting productivity, with simple and useful features like filters and the option to delete newer duplicates. However, reliability is a common concern, especially across multiple windows and different machines, plus occasional false positives that close non-duplicates (including local IP tabs). UI clarity and the semantics of what counts as a duplicate are also recurring topics, along with a request for better localization. Overall, solid functionality tempered by reliability and UX caveats.
Pros
  • Generally works well and reduces tab clutter, with reviewers noting a clear productivity improvement.
  • Simple, straightforward, and effective to use.
  • Helpful features like filters to tailor deduping and the option to delete newer duplicates.
  • Some reviewers praised it highly, including comments like "Excellent add on!" and "Absolutely excellent. 10/10.", reflecting strong user satisfaction.
  • The ability to automatically close older duplicates when a new duplicate opens was highlighted as a desirable option.
Cons
  • Inconsistent reliability across windows and devices; reports that it often only works in one window or not at all after moving to another PC.
  • It can close non-duplicates, including local network tabs or basic local IPs (false positives).
  • UI/UX can be confusing, especially around the close controls and what the "close all" function does.
  • There is confusion about what constitutes a duplicate (some users expect exact URL matches, not domain-based duplicates).
  • Localization support is lacking (Polish language support mentioned as absent).

Works really well. You can configure it to ignore certain parts of the URL like after the search (?) part or hash (#) part of the URL as some sites will generate duplicate tabs with these parts different.
