Disconnect

Make the web faster, more private, and more secure.

Disconnect is a powerful Chrome extension focused on enhancing your web experience by making it faster, more private, and secure. It visualizes and blocks invisible trackers that follow your search and browsing history across thousands of third-party sites. Recognized as the best privacy tool by the New York Times in 2016 and winner of the Innovation Award for Best Privacy and Security software at SXSW 2015, Disconnect is trusted worldwide.

By using Disconnect, pages can load up to 44% faster and save up to 39% bandwidth. Its open-source, pay-what-you-want software model encourages community contributions and transparency. The extension is compatible with other filtering add-ons like Adblock Plus, although installation order matters to ensure blocking information displays properly. With a simple green check indicating blocked trackers, Disconnect empowers users to take control of their privacy effortlessly.

User reviews

Users appreciate Disconnect for blocking trackers and hCaptcha, improving privacy. However, multiple reviews report that it causes crashes and breaks key websites like Twitter and eBay. It has not been updated recently for Firefox, leading to compatibility issues. Additionally, users find it difficult to report bugs or get developer support due to unresponsive feedback systems.
Pros
  • Effectively blocks trackers and hCaptcha on websites
  • Has a long-standing user base appreciating its functionality
  • Enhances online privacy by blocking unwanted content
Cons
  • Causes crashes and login issues on secure websites (e.g., Verizon)
  • Breaks functionality on major sites like Twitter (x.com) and eBay
  • Lack of updates for Firefox leading to decreased compatibility
  • Bug reporting and support features are non-functional or hard to access
Recent reviews
Used to work well. Now it crashes most secure logins (e.g.; secure dot verizon dot com /signin) and redirects to a json error page. When attempting to report broken sites, the "Submit" button just says "Invalid URL." There doesn't appear to be any way to inform the developer except by leaving a bad review, as their bug reporting has the same problem.

Extension safety

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Disconnect requires a lot of sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.
