Kiebitz: Chess Game Analysis Android

Kiebitz: Chess Game Analysis

By: Torim App
Stockfish analysis of your chess.com and Lichess games – local, no account.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Kiebitz looks over your shoulder.

A Kiebitz is a bird, and in German, the onlooker who watches your game over your shoulder. That is what this app does: it pulls your games from chess.com and Lichess, runs a native Stockfish across your whole history, and tells you where you actually play badly. Not "well played", but: which phase, which opening, which time control is where it falls apart.

Your chess data stays on your own devices. Kiebitz has no account or chess-data server; analysis runs locally.

IMPORT, ANALYZE, UNDERSTAND
• Enter your username, that's it. Kiebitz pulls your whole history, duplicate-safe. Over-the-board games come in as PGN.
• A native Stockfish works through the queue in the background: eval per move, inaccuracy, mistake, blunder, accuracy.
• On the phone, analysis runs with leaner settings. Large runs across your whole history are better done on the desktop. The results reach your phone through sync.

INSIGHTS: WHERE YOU ACTUALLY PLAY BADLY
Four in-depth pages across your whole history instead of one number per game.
• Accuracy and error rate over months, not over one game
• Openings with results, deviation and hit rate, split by white and black
• Errors by game phase: opening, middlegame, endgame
• Patterns: time trouble, long sessions, revenge games, opponent strength, weekday and time of day

AN OPENING BOOK THAT ACTUALLY STICKS
• Your repertoire is a position tree trained with FSRS spaced repetition, using the same approach good flashcard apps use
• Every move has its own interval; due reviews are on the dashboard
• Add moves from your own games straight into the book
• Coverage per opening, split by white and black

TACTICS MADE FROM YOUR OWN MISTAKES
• Kiebitz builds problems from the positions where you missed the winning move yourself
• Alongside the offline Lichess puzzle database
• Puzzle Elo and hit rate per theme
• Curated endgame drills against the engine: promotion, rook endings, forced mates, optionally with Syzygy tablebases
• All playable offline, no connection needed

A STUDY PLAN THAT COMES OUT OF YOUR DATA
• The planner reads your weaknesses from the analyses and suggests what to do today: reviews, one theme, one endgame
• Recommendations with reasons taken from your own games
• A daily checklist and a weekly plan you can rearrange yourself
• Reminders run locally on the device

ALSO IN THE APP
• Dashboard: rating history, recent games, due reviews, analysis queue
• Game database: filters, tags, notes per game and per move, position search, PGN import and export
• Live analysis on the board with engine lines, move quality and arrows, optionally with the chessdb.cn opening book
• Seven interface languages, one carefully made dark theme

LOCAL-FIRST, NOT JUST AS A SLOGAN
• No account: no sign-up, no email, no login
• No cloud: games, analyses and progress live in a database on your device
• No automatic crash reports
• Kiebitz connects to chess.com or Lichess for imports, to Lichess for the puzzle download, and, if enabled, to chessdb.cn for the opening book
• Kiebitz Free includes advertising.

DEVICE SYNC WITH NOTHING IN BETWEEN
• Kiebitz is also available as a desktop app for Windows. Phone and desktop sync encrypted, directly over your home network or VPN
• Pairing works with a QR code; address, pairing code and certificate fingerprint are inside it
• The camera is used for that QR scan and nothing else
• Without pairing, the phone works entirely on its own

Kiebitz is actively developed and its source code is publicly viewable. The Stockfish chess engine is licensed under GPL-3.0; the license texts and the written source offer are in the app under Settings → About Kiebitz.
