Recreational boating license: official questions, exam papers, navigation tasks
SBF Navigator guides you through the theory exam for your recreational boating license. It includes the official question and answer catalog, a mock exam using the official questionnaires, and all 15 navigation exercises with sample solutions.
THE OFFICIAL QUESTION CATALOG
All questions and answers are taken from the official question and answer catalog for the recreational boating license (as of August 1, 2023), published by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration. They are reproduced verbatim and sorted by topic: 285 questions for the SBF Coastal (German recreational boating license), 253 for the SBF Inland (German recreational boating license) with a motor, and 300 for the SBF Inland (German recreational boating license) with a motor and sail.
All licenses are included. You can switch between coastal and inland licenses at any time; your progress is saved for each license.
EXAM SIMULATION ON THE OFFICIAL PAPERS
You will receive one of the official questionnaires, exactly as published in the Federal Transport Gazette. For the SBF See (German Sport Boat License for Inland Waterways), the test consists of 7 basic questions and 23 specific questions within 60 minutes. If you already hold a license, the section you don't need to answer again, according to the marking scheme, will be omitted.
The assessment is the same as in the actual exam: for the SBF See, you must answer at least 5 out of 7 basic questions and at least 18 out of 23 specific questions correctly. The evaluation shows you both sections separately, along with the correct answer for each incorrectly answered question.
ALL 15 NAVIGATION TASKS
Each task includes all sub-questions and the official model solution, presented step by step. Course, bearing, deviation, position, and distance are covered. In the exam, each task will be divided into 9 sub-questions, of which 7 must be answered correctly.
Note: You will need the official BSH (German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency) training chart D49 to complete the exercises. It is copyrighted and cannot be included here. It costs around €20 in watersports shops or bookstores.
LEARN UNTIL YOU GET IT RIGHT
A question is only considered mastered once you've answered it correctly five times in a row. Incorrect answers are added to your error log and appear more frequently, while mastered questions appear only rarely. This way, you learn specifically what you still need to know, instead of repeatedly answering the same easy questions.
The answers are shuffled each time you complete the course, so you learn the answer itself, not its position.
TAKE A VIEW OF YOUR PROGRESS
A learning log with a percentage display for the entire catalog, progress bars for the last seven days, a learning streak, and an exam history with all your attempts. With Premium, you also get a topic analysis that shows which areas you've already mastered and identifies your remaining weaknesses.

When do you need which certificate, what are the prerequisites, how does the exam work, how much does it cost, and how do you register? Plus, the nine exam categories and what you need for the exam.
