VisiScript Text Editor

VisiScript is a comfortable text editor for programmers

Features & Capabilities

VisiScript Text Editor is a free, cross-platform code editor designed for programmers. It offers a comfortable and versatile graphical frontend supporting script and programming languages like JavaScript/QScript, Python, Ruby, Perl, and many others. Users can read, modify, save, and execute scripts using the built-in QScript interpreter or external interpreters.

Key features include syntax highlighting for numerous languages such as C/C++, Java, Python, PHP, and more, along with undo/redo, find/replace, macros, multiple document tabs, code folding, autocomplete, and debugging support for the built-in QScript on tablets. VisiScript is optimized for tablet use with external keyboards and supports UTF-8 and Latin-1 encoding. Although now obsolete in favor of SciteQt optimized for touch devices, VisiScript remains a powerful tool implemented using Qt and QScintilla, available under GPL for ARM and x86 architectures.

User Reviews

VisiScript Text Editor is praised for its uniqueness and usefulness as a mobile IDE, especially for quick coding tasks and Kivy Python development. However, users frequently report significant usability issues such as a non-functional backspace key, limited file handling (inability to open cloud or create new files), and interface problems including unreadably small text and large buttons. Some desired features and language support are missing, making the app less reliable for sustained use despite its potential.
Pros
  • Unique and refreshing IDE different from typical apps
  • Useful for quick tests while traveling
  • Supports coding and testing of Android applications in Kivy (Python) on Android
  • Good for certain scripting languages like JavaScript
  • Generally considered an excellent IDE by some users
Cons
  • Backspace key does not work and lacks key repeat functionality
  • Limited file management features: cannot open files from cloud or create new files easily
  • UI issues such as small text size making code unreadable and oversized buttons wasting screen space
  • Lacks some requested features like Verilog syntax highlighting and double-finger scrolling without selecting text
  • Some instability with interpreting certain languages like Haskell

Love this IDE, it's unique and a nice change from the typical apps you would encounter of this type. Definitely give it a go, it's potentially a refreshing change to your development workflow, and in my opinion is a currently a bit "underrated"
