By: Longri
Cachebox is an Official Geocaching API Partner Application

Features & Capabilities

Cachebox is a powerful paperless mobile geocaching app for Android, officially partnering with the Geocaching.com API. It supports both online and offline maps, enabling geocachers to manage and find mystery caches through intelligent handling of Final Waypoints and a specialized Mystery-Solver module. The app features multi-database support, image and spoiler viewing, Field Notes uploading, as well as track recording and viewing.

Developed as an open-source project by volunteers, Cachebox emphasizes user privacy by storing no personal data on servers, requiring API keys to be saved only on the user's device. It requests minimal permissions necessary for functionalities such as taking photos, videos, and recording voice notes. Support and detailed documentation are available through their GitHub wiki and community forums, providing users with help and opportunities to contribute to development.

User Reviews

Users appreciate Cachebox for its extensive geocaching features, support for GPX files, and offline map capabilities which are essential for remote areas. However, many complain about the app's complexity, slow and unintuitive interface, frequent crashes, and intrusive permissions requesting full-time GPS access even when not in active use. Installation and map display issues also commonly detract from user experience. While reliable for some long-term users, the app could benefit from simplification and improved stability to attract and retain a broader user base.
Pros
  • Supports importing and using GPX files and tracks, allowing users to load foreign GPX tracks and export traveled routes as GPX.
  • Offers extensive offline maps, which is valuable for areas without internet coverage.
  • Has many features useful for geocaching such as track recording, proximity alarms, and comprehensive cache search tools.
  • App is free to use and has been relied upon by some users for years.
Cons
  • Requires full-time GPS permission which some users find intrusive and unnecessary when not actively using the app.
  • The app interface is complicated, unintuitive, and overwhelming, leading to difficulty in operation and increased learning curve.
  • Performance issues including crashes on some devices, slow loading times, and map display problems such as corrupted or unusable maps.
  • Issues with installation and storage options (e.g., problems installing to external SD cards).
  • Lack of user-friendly features such as immediate logging of finds without needing to upload field notes.
Recent reviews
Worthless. Unless you give it full time access to your location it doesn't work. I should be able to have use location only when the app is running. "Longri November 30, 2024 It is needed in background for track recording and proximity alarm . You can switch GPS off and on in the settings of your device." Why would I want to set my device GPS off? That's stupid. I understand this app requires GPS but ONLY when I am using the app. I don't want or need it to use GPS when not using the app.
