Custom New Tab Page Firefox

Custom New Tab Page

Specify a custom URL to be shown when opening a new tab, **without changing the address bar content**.

Features & Capabilities

The Custom New Tab Page extension allows users to specify a custom URL displayed every time a new tab is opened. Unlike other add-ons, it retains the original address bar content, keeping the cursor focused there, enabling immediate typing to search or navigate elsewhere.

Setting up is straightforward through the extension's options, requiring only the desired URL. This Chrome extension supports http and https URLs but does not allow local file URLs due to security restrictions. Additionally, links on the custom page open within the iframe unless specified otherwise by the website owner.

Optional permissions are minimal, only necessary for advanced features, ensuring privacy and security. This tool enhances productivity by modifying your new tab experience without sacrificing browser functionality or user control.

User Reviews

The reviews praise Custom New Tab Page for reliably replacing the default tab with a custom page while keeping the address bar clean. It uses an iframe to host content (Start.me/self-hosted dashboards), supports dark mode, and offers handy customization. However, iframe embedding can fail with some sites (notably Google), causing load errors; X-Frame restrictions may require a workaround; and theme changes have caused browser crashes in some cases.
Pros
  • Reliable and consistently does what it promises; the extension just works.
  • Keeps the address bar empty or unchanged when opening a new tab, avoiding disruption to searches.
  • Supports iframe based content for hosting external pages such as Start.me or self-hosted dashboards, with links opening in new tabs and an available dark mode.
  • Provides practical customization options, including a visual spacer tab title, no prefilled URL, and configurable settings.
  • Widely praised by users and considered the best tool for changing the new tab page.
Cons
  • Some sites do not load when loaded in an iframe due to embedding restrictions, with Google being a common example.
  • X frame related errors can occur; enabling the remove iframe header option is a suggested workaround, but not always reliable.
  • In rare cases changing the theme crashes the browser.

I suffer from "new tab page randomly stopped working and all you can is to reset totally your fx". This temporarily saved my back and lessened my backhurt, because I made own new tab page, resembling almost 1:1 previous one, but now I can edit it as I want. Too bad Fx suffers from so many bugs and that we can't simply set new tab url via settings. Thanks a lot!
