Oil Palm Site Suitability

Oil palm, the highest oil-yielding crop, was introduced in India to help bridge the gap between edible oil demand and domestic supply. Recognizing that site suitability plays a critical role in determining productivity, the Oil Palm Site Suitability Evaluator (OPSSE) was developed to support scientifically informed crop planning.
OPSSE Version 1, launched in 2020, demonstrated significant utility for farmers, processors, and government agencies by enabling the identification of suitable locations for oil palm cultivation. It provided a structured approach to evaluate land based on key parameters, thereby improving decision-making and reducing risks associated with inappropriate site selection.
Building on this foundation, OPSSE Version 2 represents a more advanced and refined system. It integrates additional datasets and improved analytical approaches to generate more precise, site-specific suitability assessments. Importantly, the updated version provides recommendations under both rainfed and irrigated conditions, enhancing its applicability across diverse agro-climatic regions.
OPSSE Version 2 is designed to serve a wide range of stakeholders, including policymakers, state agriculture and horticulture departments, oil palm processors, farmers, and researchers. By offering reliable, data-driven insights, it facilitates better planning, promotes efficient resource use, and supports the sustainable expansion of oil palm cultivation in India.
Overall, OPSSE 2 strengthens the scientific basis for oil palm development and contributes to national efforts toward achieving greater self-sufficiency in edible oil production.
