WHY ChatTranslate
• On-device first. Translation and speech recognition run on your phone when your device supports them — Apple Translation and Apple Speech on iOS, ML Kit and on-device recognition on Android. Nothing is uploaded for supported languages.
• Tap to listen, not to translate. Tap the top half to listen in the other person's language, the bottom half for yours. Tap again to stop. ChatTranslate follows the turn-taking instead of a button after every sentence.
• Two modes. Simultaneous translates and speaks as you go, ideal for talks and announcements. Consecutive waits for a full sentence, then translates and reads it aloud, ideal for face-to-face talk.
• Works offline on supported languages. Download a language pack once over Wi-Fi, then translate on a plane, underground, or abroad with roaming off.

FREE vs STANDARD — the free version is a complete translator, not a trial:
• Free — on-device translation and speech recognition from your OS, plus text, camera, spoken output, and full history. No ads, unlimited conversations.
• Standard (optional) — unlocks downloadable on-device models for higher accuracy and wider coverage, with future models included at no extra cost.
On-device support depends on your device and OS:
• iPhone and iPad: on-device translation needs iOS 18 or later, with the language installed.
• Android: on-device speech recognition needs Android 12 or later; translation needs the ML Kit language pack.
• Each language pair is labelled in the picker so you know whether it runs on-device, needs a download, or requires a connection.
• Language packs download once over Wi-Fi; after that they work with no connection.
ChatTranslate is a work in progress. If a language pair you need is missing, tell us from Settings and we will prioritize it.

I specifically tried this offline on-device conversation translation app on my trip abroad. It worked fine on the plane, in the subway, and in places with poor signal. Both people can take turns speaking and it translates right away—very fast. What I value most is that it processes everything locally, so conversations don’t need to be uploaded to the cloud, which gives me more peace of mind about privacy. The interface is simple too, and even older family members can learn it right away.
