Features & Capabilities

Science experiences are essential for all students because science promotes understanding of the natural world and nurtures students' abilities to make informed decisions.
At its most fundamental, science is the search for patterns and the study of cause and effect.
Careful observation, inquisitiveness, sequential thinking, logical reasoning, and creativity are cornerstones of good science, and we expect all students to exhibit these traits as they explore and apply scientific principles.

The fourth grade science program continues the development of an inquiring mind through application of the scientific method.
During the units of study, the students apply the skills of observing, questioning, collecting data, predicting and communicating about scientific content.
Students develop testable questions and conduct fair test experiments as they investigate different aspects of the natural world.

Fourth grade science experiences include:

+ Force and Motion :
exploration of different types of motion, how forces cause objects to move, and how simple machines can be used to make tasks easier—students conduct experiments involving mass, speed, and force

+ Water :
investigation of the many important roles of Earth’s waters—experiments involving the states of matter, the water cycle and erosion are conducted

+ Plants :
identification and exploration of the many features and growth cycles of plants and students experiment with physical conditions that affect growth rates

+ Rocks & Minerals :
exploration of the characteristics and formation of rocks and minerals—a variety of observations and experimental tests are performed to help identify and classify rocks and minerals and students investigate the role of rocks in soil formation, and examine uses of rocks, minerals and soils

+ Catch It! :
an inquiry-based performance task during which students investigate different aspects of human reaction time; students develop an experiment to determine if a trait (e.g., right hand or left hand) or external factor (e.g. music) affects human reaction time

+ The G.P.S. Catapult Challenges :
use of the engineering design process to construct and test a catapult that can be adjusted to launch a ping pong ball the greatest distance and then with greatest accuracy in hitting a

Note: Three units are currently under development and may be piloted in some schools during 2014-2015. These three units will consolidate the topics included in the current units and improve the curriculum alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards.
