User Reviews

EDH Shieldmate is highly praised for its comprehensive features tailored for Magic: The Gathering players, especially Commander format, and its attractive interface. Users appreciate its customization options and support for multiple players. Common drawbacks include a non-intuitive commander damage interface, a learning curve for control comprehension, accidental game resets due to back button behavior, and some usability issues with player layouts and controls when using four or more players. Despite these, it remains favored over many alternatives for its versatility and performance.
Pros
  • Highly customizable with a wide array of features supporting various Magic: The Gathering formats including Commander, poison, Commander tax, experience, City's Blessing, Monarch, and Mana pools.
  • Clean and visually appealing user interface with themes, including popular ones like the Yawgmoth theme, making it attractive and easy to use once learned.
  • Supports multiple players efficiently (1-6 players) and offers presets and quick color swaps, enhancing versatility.
  • Positive overall user experience with many considering it the best life counter app compared to others available.
  • Efficient performance without heavy battery drain or overheating issues seen in other similar apps.
Cons
  • Commander damage screen is unintuitive, with many users requesting improved layout and clearer labeling or integration with life totals to avoid confusion.
  • Learning curve for controls and customization is steep; the functions of some buttons and symbols are not immediately obvious without referring to the manual or exploration.
  • The app lacks a confirmation or save state feature, causing accidental resets especially when pressing the back button, which can be frustrating mid-game.
  • Layout issues when an odd number of players are present, and some controls like down arrows malfunction or are hard to use with 4 or more players.
  • Absence of customization for some interface elements like counter indicators below life totals or font size adjustments leading to cut-off player names.

The app is not bad. But the menus are clunky and aren't intuitive. Having the life gain life loss be buttons on the sides of the life is very annoying, but the concept is there. I'll come back and check on it in the future, but right now, I'll stick to Carbon or Lifetap

Only thing I miss in this app is making the commander damage screen mimick the damage screen's layout. currently, the screen changes to a table which is not easy to associate with the player layout. I think lifelinker or lifetap does to this well, where you tap the button it opens a mini rectangle with the players in the same layout and you associate the commander damage you took.
