RIGHT-HANDED DRIVER SWINGS, FILMED FACE-ON

GolfSpeed assumes a right-handed golfer with a standard 44.5" driver. It is not an iron or wedge app, and it does not support left-handed swings. It also needs a face-on video — camera in front of you, square to your chest. Filmed from behind (down the line), the swing reads slower than it is.

HOW IT WORKS

A pose model (MoveNet) tracks your shoulders, elbows and wrists frame by frame. A double pendulum model of the swing is fitted to that motion. The club is never tracked — the model only ever sees your body — so it is treated as an extension of your forearm at the length you enter.

Distance is then projected from that speed with fixed tour-average factors: 1.48 smash factor, 1.67 yards of carry per mph of ball speed, plus 10% run. The formula is printed on the results screen.


ONE MEASUREMENT DOES THE MOST WORK

There is no reference object in your video, so GolfSpeed uses your arm to turn pixels into real distance. Your shoulder-to-wrist length anchors everything else and the speed scales directly off it — enter a length 10% too long and every number lands roughly 10% too high.

Measure from the point of your leading shoulder (the left one if you swing right-handed) to the wrist crease, arm hanging straight, and enter it in metres. The 0.58 m default is a typical adult value; your own measurement is the cheapest way to improve your results.

Most swing apps upload your video to a server. This one cannot — it makes no network calls at all.

PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING

Every number here is calculated from video. Nothing is measured by a sensor.

Club head speed is itself an estimate. Camera angle, frame rate, lighting and how cleanly the pose model locks onto your body all move it — and the app reads a flat video of a motion that happens in three dimensions.

Distance is projected from that estimate, so any error in the speed carries straight through to the yardage. The projection also cannot see strike quality, spin or launch angle. The conversion factors are tour averages, and tour players strike the ball better than the rest of us, so an off-centre hit or high spin travels less far than the screen suggests. The speed estimate can also read low. The two pull opposite ways, and neither is corrected.

So use the number as your own baseline rather than a figure to quote. Comparing this week to last week, on the same phone and the same camera angle, is what GolfSpeed is built for. It is a training aid, not a replacement for a radar or optical launch monitor.
