Work for Your Food is the fitness app built around one simple idea: do a quick workout before you eat. That's it. No half hour to one hour-long gym sessions. No complicated programs. Just a short burst of movement before each meal, and then you've earned it. It can be as quick and easy as some pushups, a 5 minute walk/run, jumping jacks, lunges, kettlebell swings, or dumbbell presses. We give you a random exercise, and you can adjust your exercise list and pick from over 100 exercises with or without equipment, based on the equipment you have available to you.

Most fitness apps assume you're already in shape. Work for Your Food meets you exactly where you are. People just starting out who are overweight and/or out of shape need to take small steps during the day and create momentum. I can’t tell you how many times I have thought to myself, I need to workout and envisioned going to the gym and/or doing some extended workout of half hour to one hour. The problem is this is an overwhelming and unmotivating goal to many people. They give up before they start because this is biting off more than they can chew. I know, because I created the app for exactly this reason.

If you're in better shape, you can choose more challenging exercises, more sets and reps, heavier weights, and so on. It is adjustable to the time, equipment, and level of motivation you have at the moment.

How It Works

Every time you're about to eat, ask yourself, “Did I work for my food?” If not, open up the Work for Your Food app, and do one or more random exercises – whatever you’re up to doing. But do at least one, and do as many sets and/or reps as you can. Not until failure or exhaustion necessarily, but maybe to 50 to 80% of your max that you feel up to doing at that moment. Then feel good about it. Mark the exercise complete, then go eat and feel proud of yourself. It takes as little as a few minutes. That's the whole thing.

The wonderful thing is that over time you will get more fit and improve your ability to perform doing your exercises. You will find that eating will often slow down your hunger and cause you to delay eating or eat less. If not, that’s fine too. Do what feels right, but mindfully see if you can eat less, less frequently, etc. Move more, eat less, as the old adage goes.

Over time, those small moments of movement add up. Two or three times a day, before each meal, you're building a habit that sticks because it's tied to something you already do every day: eat.

Others use gym equipment like dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, or a pull-up bar. You choose what's available to you and the app works around your setup.

The app cycles through your exercises so you never see the same one twice in a row until you've worked through your full list. Don't like an exercise? Skip it. Don't want to see it again? Remove it. The app adapts to you.
