Hydrogen Atom Orbitals

By: Voladd
Visualize the electron orbitals of Hydrogen Atom in 3D!

Features & Capabilities

Hydrogen Atom Orbitals is a Chrome extension that provides an interactive 3D visualization of the electron orbitals of the hydrogen atom. It illustrates the wave-like behavior of electrons by displaying cross-section surfaces of electron probability density using OpenGL and the Marching Cubes algorithm. Users can select orbitals by specifying quantum numbers n, l, and m, or pick a random orbital for exploration.

The extension allows adjustment of discretization step size and the total probability threshold for electron localization inside the orbital surface. Interactive controls enable zooming and rotating the orbital for detailed examination. The source code is openly available under the MIT License, fostering transparency and collaboration. This tool is ideal for students, educators, and enthusiasts interested in quantum mechanics and atomic-scale phenomena.

User Reviews

Users find Hydrogen Atom Orbitals app highly useful and educational for visualizing and understanding hydrogen orbitals in 3D, praising its lightweight design and helpful visualizations. However, multiple reviews note limitations including low resolution for larger orbitals, the inability to see radial and planar nodes, restricted model movement, lack of size comparison features, and a missing tutorial for beginners. Despite these issues, it remains a valuable quick reference and teaching tool.
Pros
  • Provides great educational value for understanding hydrogen atom orbitals in 3D.
  • Lightweight and quick reference app, easy to use for basic orbital visualization.
  • Visualizes eigenfunctions with percentage information, aiding comprehension.
  • Helpful for both learning and teaching orbital concepts.
  • Models are engaging and interesting, enhancing user understanding.
Cons
  • Low resolution for larger orbitals, limiting visual clarity.
  • Lack of features to display radial and planar nodes in orbitals, especially s-orbitals.
  • Restricted motion around certain axes, limiting user interaction with 3D models.
  • No clear indication of relative sizes of orbitals, which hinders comparative understanding.
  • Absence of tutorials or guidance for new users to navigate the app effectively.

This is very decent app, I tried graphing the eigenfunctions using MATLAB for a presentation but my coding sucks so I ended up just using pictures. Wish I had this app back then ;-;

Good app, couple things, the resolution is a bit low for some of the larger orbitals, maybe have an option to increase that. Can't see relative sizes of the orbitals which is what I was looking for. Liked the percentage.
