The Connects system is one of the most exploitative monetization models I've ever seen. You pay to apply, lose that money if you don't get hired, and THEN pay a service fee when you do get paid. So freelancers are charged twice, once for trying, and again for succeeding. Freelancers are people hustling to make a living, often with no stable income. The least Upwork could do is refund Connects when a freelancer doesn't land the job. Instead, they profit whether you succeed or not.

A predatory money trap! Opened my account in 2019, tested it in 2026 with real skills, and it’s a scam. Zero transparency: you pay for expensive Connects with no guarantee your proposal is even reviewed. I applied for a job only to find the client inactive for 7 days and already interviewing others, yet Upwork keeps taking money for a dead lead. To top it off, support is a useless AI agent giving robotic replies. They profit from your failure and just milk fees. Avoid it!
