TreeSnap

A citizen science app for reporting trees in the wild for breeding and genetics.

Features & Capabilities

TreeSnap is a citizen science Chrome extension designed to empower users to contribute to forest health research. By tagging trees encountered in communities, properties, or wilderness, participants help scientists identify healthy, resilient trees that are candidates for genetic sequencing and breeding programs. Using TreeSnap, concerned foresters, landowners, and nature enthusiasts collaborate to combat invasive diseases and pests threatening American forests.

The extension allows for easy recording of tree locations and health conditions, supporting nationwide efforts to understand and preserve forest ecosystems. To get involved and learn more about forest genetics and conservation, users are encouraged to visit TreeSnap.org.

User Reviews

TreeSnap is praised for aiding tree conservation efforts, facilitating offline data collection, and having strong support and user-friendly design. However, users frequently mention issues with white-on-white text due to lack of dark mode, inability to upload photos from the gallery, and registration difficulties caused by false connectivity errors. Some report lag and app crashes. Overall, it is a useful app for tree surveys but requires improvements in usability and account creation.
Pros
  • Helps with tree conservation and species surveys.
  • Works well offline allowing data collection without internet.
  • Good support from backend scientists and timely bug fixes.
  • User-friendly and well designed with informative species identification.
  • Allows uploading and referencing of collection photos.
Cons
  • Lack of dark mode support leading to visibility issues with white text on white background.
  • Unable to upload photos from the gallery, only camera uploads are supported.
  • Difficulties with account registration and connectivity issues during sign-up.
  • Some users report the app is laggy or keeps stopping.

Amazing way to help the trees of this world

Treesnap has worked very well for me. I went into a forest, completed a few of the app's surveys (you can use the app without having an internet connection! this makes sense to me, because you need to press the capture GPS button while physically at the tree), and uploaded my data later once I had cellular service again. It seems a lot of other reviewers don't realize the app works perfectly well WITHOUT internet - in fact, that seems to be the intended usage.
