Features & Capabilities

Exif Notes is a handy Chrome extension designed for film photographers who want to effortlessly record important notes and EXIF data during their shoots. It lets you build a personal database of frequently used gear, including camera bodies and lenses, which can be quickly selected when adding new rolls of film or individual frames. You can log detailed frame data such as time taken, lens used, shutter speed, aperture, location, and custom notes for comprehensive tracking.

The extension supports exporting ExifTool commands for specific film rolls, enabling seamless transfer to your computer via cloud services like Dropbox. This allows you to embed detailed metadata into scanned film files using ExifTool by Phil Harvey. Additionally, Exif Notes can export roll data as CSV files, perfect for viewing in spreadsheet programs like Excel. Developed with Material Design principles, it prioritizes speed, ease of use, and wide Android compatibility. As an open source hobby project, it is continually refined with user feedback and supports an active community on GitHub for bug reports and feature requests.

User Reviews

Exif Notes is a favored app among analog photographers due to its simple, efficient interface and comprehensive note-taking features for film photography. Users appreciate integration with exiftool and data export/import capabilities. However, multiple reviewers note limitations like missing custom aperture and exposure times, lack of cloud sync, inability to count frames backward, and some UI/functional quirks. Despite these issues, it remains a valuable tool aiding photographers in managing metadata and improving workflows.
Pros
  • Easy to use and quick interface suitable for analogue photography.
  • Comprehensive for film photographers with options to add detailed notes on films, cameras, lenses, and settings.
  • Ability to export and import database and photos, facilitating transfer between devices.
  • Integration with exiftool enhances metadata tagging capabilities.
  • Helps beginners keep notes and learn from mistakes effectively.
Cons
  • Lack of support for custom aperture and exposure time values, limiting use with certain lenses and exposures.
  • No option to sync data with cloud services like Google account for backup.
  • Frame counting cannot be set to count down, which is inconvenient for cameras that wind film backward.
  • Issues with adding new cameras, particularly error messages when selecting certain shutter speeds.
  • Screen lock behavior changed in the last update, requiring reopening the app to write comments, which is annoying.

Fantastic quick way to capture exif data for analogue photography. The easy-to-use interface is limited to useful items, with no silly icons or other "design for the sake of design" elements.

Would love an option to count frames backwards. My camera unrolls the film when loading and displays how many exposures I have left. This way I would just have to note the number displayed on my camera.
