Joining a game someone else is hosting is always free, whether you have bought anything or not. Only the host needs a game unlocked.

BUILT FOR FAMILIES, NOT STRANGERS

There is no public matchmaking and no open lobby. The host approves every person before they join, and a game already in progress is closed to newcomers. Family Mode locks those protections on and keeps them on. There is no chat, no messaging and no way for anyone to contact your device.
