Tierce - Change Ringing Book

Somewhere above you a ring of eight is turning mouth-up on its headstock, and a room of quiet people is pulling wool-bound ropes in an order that has been argued over since 1668. Tierce opens that room. It is a ringer's book for the tower and the foundry: how a bell is moulded, poured and tuned to its five partials; how a row of bells becomes a method; how a ringer holds a place, hunts up, dodges and comes back to rounds. Nothing here is decorative — every page is the sort of thing a tower captain would tell you on the stairs.

The heart of the book is the Ropesight Board, where a method unfolds one row at a time from its own place notation: choose your bell, watch the blue line thread through the rows, feel each blow in your hand, and stop the course wherever the dodge stops making sense. Around it sit a Founding shelf of plain-spoken articles on bell metal, moulds, soundbows and true-harmonic tuning, a Practice Log for the nights you actually rang — tower, method, bell, striking, what went wrong — and a Belfry Quiz that checks whether the terms have stuck. A weekly reminder nudges you toward practice night, and a running count of logged nights keeps the year honest. It all works with the phone face down and the signal gone.
