Review summary

Users appreciate TheBrain's unique mind mapping capabilities and its strong desktop version, along with cloud syncing and mobile access. However, the Android app suffers from performance issues including frequent crashes, sluggishness, and problematic synchronization leading to data inconsistencies. Many key features available on desktop are missing or poorly implemented on mobile, such as search, note editing, and link handling. Usability issues like keyboard failures, password input problems, and UI limitations further frustrate users. Overall, while the concept and desktop counterpart are praised, the Android app needs significant stability and feature improvements.
Pros
  • The app effectively complements the desktop version, allowing syncing thoughts between devices.
  • Offers a unique mind mapping experience with nonlinear relationships, surpassing other mind mapping apps.
  • The desktop version is intuitive, user-friendly, and greatly assists in life organization.
  • Cloud sync feature enables synchronization of data between desktop and mobile.
  • Mobile access allows managing and checking thoughts on the go, making the app more versatile.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes, especially when editing notes or opening brain data sets, making the app unreliable.
  • Poor performance and sluggishness on various Android devices, including phones and tablets.
  • Synchronization and cloud sync issues causing data inconsistency between devices; brains created on one device often not visible on others.
  • Incomplete feature set compared to the desktop version, missing basic functionalities like search, adding links, and better UI design for mobile.
  • Bugs like keyboard not appearing for notes, inability to enter full passwords, images not displaying in notes, and auto-capitalization that can't be disabled discourage mobile use.

This used to be great, and now it appears to no longer be supported. No updates and lots of crashes. Have to stick with the desktop version.

Update: changing review from 2 to 3 stars. Admittedly, there have been a few (minor) improvements, bug fixes, etc. over the past 4 years, but nothing that convinces me to keep using this app; it still feels quite sluggish. Most importantly, the key feature, i.e. plex visualization just doesn't seem to tranfer well to mobile devices: thoughts are squeezed in 1/3 of the screen in portrait mode, even worse when turning to landscape. I'm not UI design expert, but there's got to be a better way...

This Android version isn't working well on my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Perhaps it works better on a more powerful tablet, but it's so slow on the phablet that I rarely use it. In fact, the web-version works faster than the app.

Reduced rating on the mobile app because I changed my password to the one I use in most places. It is longer, so probably more secure, but the app won't let me enter the whole thing in. I type part way and then the keyboard disappears and the password field is cleared. I was using it to remember my grocery list, but but couldn't get in at the supermarket, and as a result missed a vital item. That's a major fail for something whose purpose is to always give access to things you want to remember.

I don't understand why there is not more features from desktop version available. Furthermore, the search is not working at the moment, rendering the app pretty much useless, which is not what I expect to get for 150 dollar subscription.

Very sneaky. Cant sign in in app or in browser, apparently have signed up to a 200 dollar subscription. Beyond unimpressed.

I've been using this for years on the desktop. TheBrain app takes mind mapping software to a whole new level. It allows for relating one thought or idea to many thoughts, allowing one to explore and see nonlinear relationships in ways not possible with other mind mapping apps.

I essentially bought the licence to use the Brain on my Android 10. Now that I'm finally starting to use it, I find that notes doesn't even open up my keyboard. I'm very dissapointed!

The app has a good feature set, the note editor could use a little polishing. Before all that however, the frequent crashes need to stop!

Crashes when editing notes. Also missing basic features, such as adding a link to the thought on mobile. Please fix this app finally! As I can understand you are developing features, a life organization app that keeps crashing is UNACCEPTABLE.
