The sensor in your smartphone is a magnetometer and magnetometers detect MAGNETIC FIELDS not metal. Ferrous metals and a variety of other materials are magnetic but gold certainly is not. This app finds IRON and some grades of STEEL but not gold or any other metal. This app isn't even detailed enough or has a good sampling rate to be able to detect much of anything at depth beyond refrigerator magnets. Magnetometers have their uses but locating gold isn't one of them.
