Bolo — a calm, offline language-learning app for kids

Bolo is a quiet, calm learning app for small children. Soft off-white background, a single accent colour, and large clear letters in both Devanagari and Latin script — no flashing visuals, no background music, no celebration screens. The child sets the pace; the app never hurries, never scores, never hands out rewards.

In a parent's own recorded voice
Every word the child hears in Bolo is recorded by you — the mother, father, an older sibling, or a grandparent, whoever the child is closest to. The microphone is used only by a parent, and only on recording screens that sit behind a small parent-gate arithmetic check. Recordings stay on your phone or tablet — they are never uploaded, never synced, never shared. The child-facing screens never open the microphone.

Two language packs
This release ships with Hindi and English — both available, switch any time in Settings. Bengali coming soon.

In the Hindi pack
• वर्णमाला (alphabet) — finger-tracing the Hindi alphabet from अ to ज्ञ, with your voice saying each letter and a familiar example word.
• मात्रा (vowel signs) — क, का, कि, की, कु, कू… the first key to reading Devanagari.
• गिनती (numbers) — numbers 1 to 20 in both Arabic and Devanagari numerals, with tracing and counting.

In the English pack
• Alphabet — A to Z, finger-tracing each letter with a familiar example word ("A for Apple").
• Numbers — 1 to 20, mirroring the Hindi numbers module.

More modules — body parts, picture-words, and stories — will arrive one at a time, unhurried.

What's not in the app
• No advertisements
• No accounts, no sign-up
• No analytics, no telemetry, no tracking — not even "anonymous" or "aggregated"
• No scores, no rewards, no streaks
• No in-app purchases
• No speech recognition — the app never evaluates the child's voice

When does it need internet?
The app works fully offline. A future version may allow you, the parent, to explicitly tap a button in Settings to download an optional content pack — and even then the download size is shown first. The app never connects on its own.

Particularly helpful for
Bolo can be particularly helpful for young children just beginning to speak — because the voice they hear is familiar, not a stranger's, and every word can be repeated at the child's own pace. Bolo is not a clinical or therapeutic product; it is simply a calm companion for everyday practice in a parent's own voice.

About the maker
Bolo was built by a mother for her toddler son, who is starting to speak. It is now shared with other families in the hope that it is useful. Bolo is part of SpotKare — a small set of calm, parent-led tools.
