HanziPro

HanziPro is a calm, offline trainer for practicing Chinese characters and vocabulary on Android. It is built for learners who want to focus on handwriting, organise their own word lists, and own their data.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

• Practice handwriting like a workbook. Write a character ten or twenty times in a row, with every previous attempt kept in a strip below the writing square so you can see your progress on the page.
• Reveal stroke order on demand. When you are stuck, tap to see the correct stroke order animated on top of the writing square. No penalty, no harsh grading.
• Review with spaced repetition. A separate review flow uses an FSRS-based scheduler to bring back characters before they fade, with Again / Hard / Good / Easy grading and clear interval previews.
• Organise vocab into folders and lists. Group lists like HSK 1, HSK 2, Travel, or Food under folders that match how you study.
• Add words your way. Type new words by hand or import them from a CSV file. The bundled CC-CEDICT dictionary fills in pinyin and meanings automatically.
• Practice characters in word context. The app keeps one handwriting card per character, but always shows the word it came from, so you learn 人 through 家人 or 人口 instead of in isolation.
• Switch between simplified and traditional. Set your preferred script in settings. When the two scripts diverge, both forms are taught.

OFFLINE AND PRIVATE BY DESIGN

• No account, no login, no cloud sync.
• No analytics or tracking.
• All data lives on your device.
• Bundled offline dictionary (CC-CEDICT) and stroke data (hanzi-writer-data) — no network calls during practice.
• One-tap backup to a zip file you can store anywhere, plus per-list CSV export.

WHAT IS IN VERSION 1

• Mandarin Chinese (simplified and traditional).
• Notebook-style handwriting practice.
• SRS reviews for the writing card type.
• Folders, lists, manual entry, CSV import, dictionary autofill.
• Stroke-order reveal for around 9,000 characters.
• Full backup and restore, CSV export.

WHAT IS NOT IN VERSION 1

• No automatic stroke-recognition grading. You self-grade your own handwriting; the app does not judge individual strokes.
• No reading, meaning, tone, or audio drills yet. Those modes are visible in the UI but disabled until a future update.
• No leaderboards, social features, or in-app purchases.
• Mandarin only for now.

CREDITS

• Dictionary data: CC-CEDICT, used under its license.
• Stroke and median data: hanzi-writer-data, used under the Arphic Public License. Full attribution is shipped inside the app.
