Works with both nfc to read and scan chips and also barcodes, we use it for both and have been incredibly impressed by how well thought out the design is and how simple the UI and UX are to navigate. The app builders are extremely proactive and responsive and look for ways to grow their product with you. Simply cannot recommend this product highly enough.
