User Reviews

Sonic 4 Episode I for Android is appreciated by Sonic fans for its nostalgia, decent visuals, and music, but suffers from multiple issues like problematic sound effects, small and clunky controls, poor physics, and a lack of updates causing compatibility problems on modern devices. These flaws make the game feel like an outdated, poorly optimized port, though it remains a fun time-waster for some.
Pros
  • The game is enjoyable for die-hard Sonic fans and offers a nostalgic high-speed experience.
  • Visuals and graphics are decent with some improvements over console versions, especially in Sonic's character model.
  • The music and soundtrack are generally well-liked and considered a positive aspect.
  • The game is affordable and considered a decent price for mobile gaming.
  • Levels are designed with some unique features and boss fights add some variety.
Cons
  • Sound effects are problematic: missing, low-pitched, or inconsistent on modern Android devices.
  • Controls are small, clunky, or hard to use; D-Pad and jump buttons especially criticized.
  • Physics and momentum are unsatisfactory, with stiff controls and odd acceleration mechanics.
  • The game is outdated with no recent updates, leading to compatibility issues on newer Android versions.
  • Low frame rate, screen cropping, and graphical issues detract from the experience on mobile devices.

Outdated Android experience. Gamepad support wonky; can move with D-Pad fine but only jump with thumbstick buttons? Audio off-pitch (noticeable on Sega boot screen). Playing on an Anbernic RG Cube but the game does at least fit and adjust well on a square 1:1 720p screen

Sega, if you're not going to update a game to work on newer android, don't sell it for new android... There is a myriad of issues pertaining to the quality of how the newer android versions (13+) run Sonic 4 Episode 1. Mainly, the sound effects are missing. Sound effects previously had a problem where they would sound much deeper than they should but it was better than nothing. You recently updated episode 2 but episode 1 is stuck from 8 years ago. It's a scam if you don't fix this game.
