The Symbol Digit Modality Test (SDMT) assesses divided attention and visual scanning. Using a reference key; the examinee is required to pair specific symbol with the corresponding number. The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) detects cognitive impairment and visual scanning. SDMT is an ideal way for busy clinicians to screen people of every age for organic cerebral disfunction; it demonstrates remarkable sensitivity in detecting not only the presence of brain damage, but also changes in cognitive functioning over time and in response to treatment. Like any single neuropsychological test, the SDMT is optimally used as part of a battery of instruments to assess spontaneous recovery of cerebral functions as well as improvement resulting from specific therapeutic regimes.
