Sand Calculator

Sand Calculator works out how much sand you need to fill an area or a volume — and turns that into a weight in kilograms and tonnes and the number of bags to buy. It works completely offline and nothing you enter ever leaves your phone.

HOW IT WORKS
Give the app a length, width and depth, or type a volume you already know. It then:

1. Finds the volume — length x width x depth, with every measurement in metres. A 5 m by 4 m bed at 5 cm deep is 5 x 4 x 0.05 = 1 cubic metre of sand.

2. Converts the volume to weight using the sand's bulk density. Dry building sand is about 1600 kg per cubic metre, so 1 cubic metre weighs roughly 1600 kg, or 1.6 tonnes. You can change the density to match wet, compacted or a different sand.

3. Adds an optional wastage allowance for settling, spillage and uneven ground, then divides the weight by your bag size to give a whole number of bags.

This is a simplified educational tool. The sand you actually need depends on its moisture, grading and how firmly it is compacted, and bag weights differ between suppliers. Treat the figures as a starting point and confirm final quantities with your merchant before ordering.
