Pipe Volume Calculator works out how much water a piping system holds — and everything that follows. Pick the sizes and schedules, type the lengths, count the fittings, and read the gallons, litres, flow velocity and the time to fill, flush and dose the system. It works fully offline — nothing you enter ever leaves your phone.
This is a calculator about the CONTENTS of the pipe, not its weight. Volume is what you need when purging a line, chlorinating a new main, charging a heating circuit with glycol, sizing an expansion vessel, or working out how long after opening a valve the water at the far end will change.
HOW IT WORKS
Pipe size is a name, not a measurement. Four-inch pipe is 4.500 in across the outside whatever the schedule; a heavier schedule thickens the wall inward. So the app looks the bore up in the ASME B36.10M table: bore = outside diameter minus twice the wall.
Run volume is the classic formula — pi x inside radius² x length. Four-inch Schedule 40 comes out at 0.661 gallons/ft; two-inch at 0.174.
Real systems are never one size, so the app sums a header or main plus two branch runs, each with its own size and length, into one system total in gallons and litres.
Fittings are added on top. Every elbow, tee and valve is a short piece of bore, charged as 2.5 nominal diameters of extra centreline.
From volume and flow rate come the times. Fill/drain is volume over flow; a flush is the number of system volumes you want exchanged. Velocity = 0.4085 x GPM / bore², and run over velocity gives residence time.

AN ESTIMATE, NOT A HYDRAULIC DESIGN
This is a simplified educational tool. It counts pipe and fittings only — tanks, cylinders, boilers, pumps, valve bodies and heat emitters hold water too and must be added separately. Bores are nominal, so tolerance, lining, coating and scale shift the real figure. Flow splits between branches, so branch velocity is deliberately conservative. Fill and drain figures are volume over flow, not a gravity-drainage model. Dosing figures help you order chemical; they are not a disinfection procedure. Always follow the applicable standard, manufacturer's instructions and your local water authority, and have a qualified engineer or plumber confirm anything that matters.
