Flooring Calculator

Flooring Calculator works out how many cartons of hard flooring — plank or tile — a room needs, and then plans the layout. Enter room size, plank size and carton coverage, choose a pattern, and get the order quantity, row plan, stagger and trim instantly. Works fully offline and nothing you enter leaves your phone.

HOW IT WORKS

The app follows how installers actually set out a floor:

1. Calculates floor area from room length × width.

2. Adds waste based on layout pattern:

* Straight: ~10%
* Diagonal: ~15%
* Herringbone: ~20%
You can override this from 0–40%.

3. Converts area to cartons. Flooring is sold in whole cartons, so total area ÷ coverage per carton is rounded up.

4. Plans the rows. Usable width = room width − expansion gaps at both walls. This is divided by plank width. If the last row is too narrow (≈ under 2 in), the layout is rebalanced so the first and last rows are equal — avoiding thin slivers.

5. Sets end-joint stagger:

* ≤3 in wide: ≥6 in offset
* 3–5 in: ≥8 in
* > 5 in: ≥10 in
> Applied as a repeating starter-cut pattern so joints are well distributed.

Example:
A 16 × 13 ft room = 208 sq ft.
+10% waste → 228.8 sq ft.
At 24 sq ft/carton → 10 cartons (240 sq ft), leaving spare.
Across the room, gaps reduce usable width; if the last row is too small, the app balances first and last rows for a clean finish.

This is a simplified tool for rectangular rooms. Real spaces include closets, angles, out-of-square walls and subfloor variations that affect layout and quantities.
