Asphalt Calculator helps you work out, in seconds, how many tons of hot mix a driveway, car park or road patch will take, and roughly what it will cost. Enter the paving area and the compacted thickness and read the order quantity straight away. It works completely offline and nothing you enter ever leaves your phone.

HOW IT WORKS
The app uses the standard paving method, in feet, inches and US tons:

1. It measures the plan area from the length and width you enter, or you can type the square footage directly.

2. The compacted thickness in inches is divided by 12 and multiplied by the area to give the compacted volume in cubic feet.

3. That volume is multiplied by the mix density in pounds per cubic foot and divided by 2,000 for US tons. Dense-graded hot mix finishes at about 145 lb/ft3, which is 2,323 kg/m3.

4. A waste and compaction allowance you choose (typically 5 to 10 percent) is added on top, for joints, wedges, spillage, the mix that clings to the truck bed and the extra the screed pulls to hold grade.

5. The tons to order are multiplied by your delivered price per ton for an estimated total.

A worked example: a 60 ft by 20 ft driveway is 1,200 square feet. At 3 inches compacted that is 300 cubic feet, which at 145 lb/ft3 weighs 43,500 lb, or 21.75 US tons. With an 8 percent allowance you order 23.49 US tons — 21.31 tonnes — and at $120 per ton that is about $2,819.

AN ESTIMATE, NOT A PAVING QUOTE
This is a simplified educational tool for a single compacted lift on a prepared base. Real jobs vary with mix design, aggregate gradation, the compaction actually achieved, sub-base condition, cross-fall, wedges and joints, haul distance and plant minimum loads. Price per ton covers the delivered mix only, not mobilisation, milling, tack coat, base repair or rolling. Always confirm quantities and pricing with your asphalt plant or paving contractor before ordering.
