PerliQuest: GPS Treasure Hunt

PerliQuest is a GPS treasure hunt and outdoor scavenger hunt game you play on your feet. A quest is a set of real places with a fence drawn around each one. Walk to a stop, and standing inside its fence unlocks the puzzle waiting there. Solve it, move on, and see where you sit against everyone else racing the same quest.

You have to actually be there: your position is checked on the server and answers are graded there too, so nothing on your phone holds the key.

HOW A TREASURE HUNT WORKS
• A map shows the quests published near you, nearest first, with the distance to each.
• Start one and the Play screen gives you the clue for the stop you are on, and says when you are inside the fence.
• Many kinds of puzzle: riddles, multiple choice, clock faces, numbers, compass bearings, ordering, estimates, and stops where arriving is the answer.
• Some stops ask for a photo, taken there and then with the camera. There is no gallery picker, on purpose.
• A hint costs score, and the cost is shown before you take it.
• Finish and you get your time, your score, stops solved, hints taken and wrong answers.

RACE OTHER TEAMS
• A live map shows every team racing the same quest right now.
• Your position on it is snapped to a grid of about 25 metres: no speed, no heading, no trail.
• You are only on that map while your run is active. Leave the run and you are off it.
• It is reciprocal: you can see it only while you are racing, so everyone you can see can see you.
• The leaderboard ranks by stops solved, then points, then time, with your own row pinned.

PRIZES, AND WHAT IT COSTS
• PerliQuest is free and paid for by ads. A one-time Remove ads purchase hides them. No subscription.
• A small banner sits in its own strip above the tabs on each main screen, never over the map or a clue, plus at most one full-screen ad after you finish a run, never during a stop.
• Some quests carry a prize, described before you start, with a countdown to when its window opens.
• Sign in with your Google account to start. A prize claim uses your account's contact details, so we can reach you.

WHY IT ASKS FOR LOCATION
That permission is the game — a stop unlocks because you are standing in it.
• Location is collected only while a run is in progress, with a notification on screen the whole time.
• The app does not hold the background location permission at all. When you are not in a run, PerliQuest is not looking.
• Say no and you can still browse quests, the leaderboard and prizes; you just cannot unlock a stop.
• The camera is used only for photo-proof stops, and only for a photo taken inside the app.

WHAT LEAVES YOUR PHONE
• Your position, while a run is active. That is what a fence check is.
• Photo answers on the stops that ask for one. They are deleted after 30 days, unless an open prize claim still depends on one.
• What you typed is not kept. A submission stores a short one-way digest of your answer — enough to spot the same guess twice, useless for reading it back.
• Ads come from Google AdMob, which receives your advertising ID, an approximate location from your IP address and which ads you saw. In the EU and UK it asks for your consent first. It never gets your GPS position, runs, answers or photos.
• Usage counts stay on your phone and never carry a place.

BEFORE YOU GO OUT
• Look up. A quest puts your attention on a screen outdoors, near traffic, water and other people. Stop walking before you read a clue.
• A fence is a destination, not a route: PerliQuest does not know if a way to it is open or legal.
• Do not play while driving or cycling, climb to reach a stop, or trespass. If a stop needs any of that, tell us.
• Under-16s should play with an adult.

PerliQuest needs an internet connection: quests, grading, scores and prizes live on our server. Quests you have already opened stay readable if the signal drops.
