User Reviews

Users praise Codec Info as a useful tool for identifying hardware-accelerated codec support and for gauging device playback capabilities. It clearly marks hardware vs. software decoding and has a clean, ad‑free interface. Some reviews, however, raise credibility concerns by calling it a fake app, and a few report stability/UI bugs on certain devices. Overall, it’s a practical, no‑nonsense codec info resource when it runs on a compatible device and OS.
Pros
  • Indispensable for identifying which codecs support hardware acceleration (encoder/decoder profiles).
  • Helps assess device playback capabilities for high‑resolution content (e.g., 8K/5K) and hardware requirements.
  • Clear, ad‑free UI that shows built‑in codecs and whether they run in hardware or software.
  • Does what it promises without fluff; concise, to‑the‑point information.
  • No ads or in‑app purchases reported by users.
Cons
  • Credibility concerns: a couple of reviews label the app as fake or question its authenticity.
  • UI/stability issues reported on some devices (Android 6 crash when opening settings; UI/search glitches).

very useful app. indispensible for determining exactly which encoder (recording) and decoder (playback) profiles for each codec are capable of hardware acceleration. when arbitrary transcode/encode profile customization is used, it will usually break this compatibility and force software. this is hugely important with lower performance embedded device playback (especially budget Smart TV brands, with less licensed software/hardware to save $)
