User Reviews

Users find the Virtual Volunteer Android app easy to use and efficient for barcode scanning and timing, often faster than handheld devices, and appreciate data retention and WEBFMS integration. However, multiple reviews highlight unreliable QR scanning due to camera view distortions, absence of scan guidance features on Android, accidental touches registering as timer splits, battery drain, and screen timeout problems. Despite these issues, the app improves volunteer experience but needs enhancements for consistent Android compatibility and usability.
Pros
  • App is simple, well designed, and easy to use for timing and scanning.
  • Scans barcodes faster and more easily than handheld devices.
  • Data retention is reliable; data stays if you exit or reboot the app.
  • Ability to scan different barcode formats and position/barcode simultaneously on Android.
  • Integration with WEBFMS for direct upload of results improves workflow.
Cons
  • QR code scanning is unreliable on many Android devices; camera view is stretched or squashed causing scan failures.
  • Scanner lacks a red line or zoomed focus area on Android, making barcode alignment harder.
  • Timekeeper function registers clicks from anywhere on the bottom half of the screen, leading to accidental splits.
  • Battery drain during scanning; app struggles to last full event duration.
  • Screen timeout issues during timing; app doesn't prevent lock screen activation causing delays.

Could do better. I noticed that my colleague scanning had a very useful red line on his screen making it very useful to home in on the barcodes. On my Motorola this doesn’t appear so have to move around to find the scan point. Also didn’t register a token barcode for some unknown reason.

The timekeeper function doesn't just register when you hit the stopwatch button but registers a click from anywhere on the bottom half of the screen. If you hold your phone by the edges (which everyone does), you run the risk of counting multiple fantom runners, especially when you're wearing mittens or gloves. It should give us a safe border on the edges of the screen. That would save a lot of time for the run director and the timekeeper when they have to clean up the results after a run.
