Daode Jing: Tao Te Ching

Tao Te Ching, traditionally attributed to Laozi in the Spring and Autumn period, is the foundational text of Daoist thought and one of the most concise yet profound classics in the history of Chinese philosophy. Comprising just over five thousand characters, it is divided into two sections: the Dao Jing (Classic of the Way) and the De Jing (Classic of Virtue). Through highly condensed aphoristic expressions, it elucidates the origin of the universe, political ideals, and wisdom for self-cultivation, exerting an irreplaceable influence on later philosophy, religion, literature, and political thought.

At its core, the Tao Te Ching takes the "Way" (Dao) as its highest category, emphasizing propositions such as "the Way models itself on what is natural," "governing by non-interference," and "softness overcomes hardness." It advocates conforming to the patterns of heaven and earth while reducing artificial contrivance. The text encompasses both metaphysical reflections on the generation and operation of the cosmos and practical concerns such as statecraft, social conduct, and self-cultivation, forming a system of wisdom characterized by opposition to absolutism and a reverence for balance and moderation.

Throughout history, interpretations of the Tao Te Ching have been extraordinarily rich. Since the Han dynasty, Wang Bi's commentary has been the most widely circulated, while Daoism has elevated it to the status of a fundamental scripture. Confucians, Chan Buddhists, and literati across the ages have also drawn resources from it. Its language is terse yet polysemous, with famous phrases such as "the highest good is like water," "great sound is barely audible," and "contentment brings no disgrace" having long been integrated into everyday Chinese cultural expression.

As a representative text of Eastern wisdom, the Tao Te Ching is not only a key to understanding the history of Chinese thought but also a classic widely translated and studied throughout the world.
