Moodroll: Film Camera Journal

Moodroll is a mood journal you actually want to reopen.

Most mood trackers record a day as an emoji and a line of text, and there is nothing to come back to. This one records it as a photograph. Give the day one of seven colours, and weeks later the timeline is a grid of colour — the shape of a month, readable without a word of it.

A DIARY THAT NEVER NAGS

Tag the day with a colour, and add a note if you want to. Insight counts them back to you — counts, only. No score, no trend warning, no advice about your own life.

The streak counts days and never counts down. Miss a day and it is forgiven, twice a month, and today never counts against you because the day is not over. There is one optional reminder, once a day, and it skips any day you have already recorded — a colour on its own is enough, no photograph required.

SEVENTEEN CAMERAS, NOT SEVENTEEN FILTERS

This is where the photographs come from, and it is why the diary is worth reopening. Each look is rendered per shot — grain, halation, lens softness, vignette — rather than stamped over a finished image. Several of them behave like the real thing, too: the single-use camera gives you 27 frames before you load a new roll, the cross-processed roll gives you 36, the instant cameras print inside a white border, and the early digicam shoots at its own small sensor size, so the softness is in the picture instead of on it.

Free forever, at full quality: Gold Hour, Pocket '96 and CCD '03. These are not weakened versions — they are three of the seventeen.

With Pro: Soft Portrait, Everyday, Tungsten Night, Mono Grit, One-Shot, Handycam, Instant Square, Instant Mini, Expired Roll, Infra Pink, Silver Bleach, Cross Lab, Slide 64 and Pale Wash.

YOUR DIARY STAYS ON YOUR PHONE

Your photos, moods and notes never leave this phone. There is no account, no server, and no cloud sync — and the diary is excluded from Android's automatic Google Drive backup, which is on by default for most apps.

Anonymous usage and crash reports do go to Google Firebase so that bugs can be found and fixed. They never contain a photo, a note, or a mood. No advertising identifier is collected. The full privacy policy is linked on this page.

NO ADS. NOT NOW, NOT LATER.

WHAT PRO ADDS

- All seventeen cameras
- Build your own camera: pick the film, the grain, the lens, the border, and how many frames the roll holds. Give it a name.
- Send a camera you built to a friend as a short code or a file. Anyone can open one — you don't need Pro to use a camera somebody sent you.
- Record a day straight from the home-screen widget, in two taps, without opening the app
- App lock, with your fingerprint or screen lock

Available as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time purchase. Prices, and any free trial you are eligible for, are shown in the app.

The month grid on your home screen is free. The free tier keeps your whole diary — every day you record stays, and stays visible — nothing is hidden behind the price, and nothing is ever deleted.

REQUIREMENTS

Android 7.0 or newer, and a camera. The camera and the diary work with no connection at all.
