Al-Muwatta' is a book authored by the founder of the Maliki school of thought, Imam Malik ibn Anas. Written in the 8th century CE, it is one of the oldest collections of hadith texts dealing with Islamic law.

The Abbasid Caliph Abu Ja'far al-Mansur (d. 158 AH) approached Imam Malik during the Hajj season, requesting that he compile a comprehensive book on jurisprudence, one that would unify and organize the work according to specific scholarly standards. He said to him, "O Abu Abdullah, compile jurisprudence and write books on it, avoiding the strict opinions of Abdullah ibn Umar, the lenient opinions of Abdullah ibn Abbas, and the unusual rulings of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. Instead, focus on the middle ground and the consensus of the imams and companions, so that, God willing, people will follow your work and your books. We will disseminate them throughout the lands and entrust them to adhere to them." Al-Mansur asked Imam Malik to compile his book into a unified body of knowledge, but Imam Malik declined, demonstrating his profound understanding and fairness. Al-Muwatta is one of the nine canonical books of Prophetic Hadith. It is among the most authentic books of Hadith and possesses some advantages even over the two Sahihs (Bukhari and Muslim), such as its shorter chains of transmission and its combination of Hadith, legal opinions, and other rulings. Due to its value and the high standing of its compiler, scholars have devoted themselves to its preservation and explanation. The Hadith are presented under the chapters of jurisprudence and creed. This edition of Al-Muwatta is the best, as it was edited by Professor Muhammad Fuad Abd al-Baqi, who meticulously verified the text, citing the Hadiths from the two Sahihs and sometimes from other sources. He also explained some unfamiliar terms in the margins and concluded the book with an introduction that arranges the Hadiths according to their respective topics.

He is Abu Abdullah Malik ibn Anas ibn Malik ibn Abi Amir al-Asbahi al-Himyari al-Madani (93-179 AH / 711-795 CE), a Muslim jurist and Hadith scholar, the second of the four Imams of Sunni Islam, and the founder of the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence. He was renowned for his vast knowledge, his powerful memory of the Prophet's sayings (Hadith), and his meticulousness in verifying them. He was also known for his patience, intelligence, dignity, and good character. Many scholars praised him, including Imam al-Shafi'i, who said: "When scholars are mentioned, Malik is the brightest star, and Malik is God's proof to His creation after the Successors (Tabi'in)."

It is worth mentioning that Imam Al-Shafi'i said about this book: "There is no book after the Book of God Almighty more beneficial than the book of Malik ibn Anas."
