why is this app asking permission to access my contacts?

I haven't had an issue with these specific notes or app. It was great for use and easily accessible as well as organizing. The only complaint I have is I never uninstalled the app, and it previously wiped all the notes in its booking. I tried to pull open the recovery backup... and I could not pull any trace of records. Very disappointed with this. I have been writing and working out of this app for a year and have lost a lot of my articles, and work pieces.
