MIDI Keyboard Android

MIDI Keyboard

On-screen keyboard that sends MIDI messages to other devices or apps.

Features & Capabilities

The MIDI Keyboard Chrome extension is an on-screen MIDI controller designed for sending MIDI messages to external MIDI devices, laptops, or compatible apps. It does not produce sound itself but acts as a versatile keyboard for controlling synthesizers and other MIDI-enabled instruments.

This extension is ideal for musicians, software developers, and OEMs who want to test Android MIDI features or control hardware synthesizers directly from their browser. To connect, users can set their device's USB mode to MIDI and select the appropriate receiver in the app interface. Detailed usage instructions and source code are provided via the official Android developer documentation, making it a transparent and customizable tool for MIDI applications.

User Reviews

The app is a simple, generally functional MIDI controller that works with DAWs and USB MIDI setups, including on tablets. However, it suffers from significant limitations: no octave switching beyond two fixed octaves, missing settings and external keyboard support, and reports of not working or producing sound on some devices. It also lacks many MIDI features (sustain, pitch bend, modulation) and basic output options, making it less usable for more advanced users.
Pros
  • Simple, functional MIDI controller that generally works.
  • Works with DAWs (e.g., FL Studio) and can be used with loopMIDI as a MIDI controller.
  • Can function as a USB MIDI keyboard for external synths/devices.
  • Polyphonic support improves playability.
  • Tablet-friendly with larger keys for easier tapping.
Cons
  • No octave switching; limited to two octaves with no scrolling.
  • No settings or clear way to connect external keyboards; configuration is unclear.
  • Some users report it doesn't work or produces no sound on some devices.
  • Lacks essential MIDI features and output options (no sustain, pitch bend, modulation; no internal speaker/volume controls).
  • Keyboard layout/navigation can be non-intuitive.

what it says on the tin

Excellent Excellent, but not just on its own, because it is a keyboard (input device) and needs to be connected to a computer application that supports those inputs in order for them to be heard, recorded, and then saved - I personally use "Midify" from the Microsoft Store.
