BeachScout is a worldwide beach exploration application designed to help travellers, swimmers, naturists and outdoor enthusiasts discover beaches using open geographic data together with moderated community contributions.

The idea for BeachScout began with a simple observation: while many travel applications exist, there was no simple worldwide map dedicated to the naturist community that also remained useful to everyone looking for beaches and swimming places. BeachScout was created to fill that gap.

Whether you are planning a holiday, travelling through a new country or simply looking for somewhere to swim near your current location, BeachScout helps you discover nearby locations quickly and easily.

Built on open geographic data

BeachScout uses open geographic technologies including:

• OpenStreetMap

• Nominatim

• Overpass API

• MapLibre

• Wikimedia resources

• Supabase

Rather than relying on a fixed commercial database, BeachScout performs live local searches using open geographic information that continues to grow and improve.

Community contributions

One of BeachScout's main goals is to allow local knowledge to improve the map.

Users can contribute:

• Up to five photographs for each location

• A short description (up to 300 characters)

• Local information in their own language

Every submission is reviewed before publication to help maintain quality.

Contributors always remain the owners of their photographs and descriptions. BeachScout receives permission only to display the material as part of the service.

Instead of presenting hundreds of complicated options, it provides an intuitive interface that allows users to search around a destination or around their current location within seconds.

ScoutPlatform

BeachScout is the first application developed as part of ScoutPlatform, an independent initiative creating simple exploration tools built on open geographic data and responsible community participation.

Future ScoutPlatform applications will expand this approach to other types of exploration.
