Users appreciate the high-quality, wide-ranging content of The New York Review of Books, valuing its stimulating and meaningful articles. However, the app has significant usability problems, including a non-intuitive interface, limited navigation, inability to remember reading positions, lack of font size adjustment, and frequent freezing. Offline download capabilities are limited, and subscription management is confusing, with no desktop access for some users. Additionally, the app lacks accessibility features and easy content sharing, which impacts overall user satisfaction despite the excellent journal content.
Pros

  • Enjoyable long-form articles that cover a broad range of topics.
  • App allows access to some of the finest articles and essays in English periodicals.
  • The publication introduces readers to interesting books and stimulates concentration.
Cons
  • App interface is non-intuitive, primitive, and buggy with frequent freezing issues.
  • Lacks key usability features such as remembering last read article or issue and no easy navigation to articles due to unclear titles.
  • No option to change font size, making reading difficult especially on smaller devices.
  • Limited offline download availability; only about a third of issues can be downloaded.
  • Subscriptions purchased via Google Play do not grant desktop access; account recognition issues cause frustration.
• Poor content sharing options and lack of accessibility features like Google Assistant support for reading articles aloud.
Recent reviews
I have been reading the New York review since I was 18 (I'm 75) and it is by far the most stimulating, wide ranging, knowledgeable, meaningful journal that I have ever encountered. I can't live without it!

Has some interesting articles but the titles are so arbitrary that it is really hard to tell from the title whether an article is likely to be of interest. I'm usually short of time, so if I have 10 minutes I want to pick one article, quickly, read and have something to mull over in the back of my mind for the rest of the day. If the titles don't let me filter, I spend my time poking into articles that turn out to be of no real interest and I have just wasted my time in a most unsatisfying way.
