The Kangxi Dictionary was compiled during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. It was edited by scholars such as Zhang Yushu and Chen Tingjing under imperial order, and was an expansion and revision of the Ming Dynasty works Zihui by Mei Yingzuo and Zhengzitong by Zhang Zilie. The compilation began in the 49th year of Kangxi's reign and took six years to complete, hence the name Kangxi Dictionary.

The dictionary uses a combination of radical classification and stroke order. It is divided into twelve sections (identified by the twelve Earthly Branches), each section further subdivided into three volumes. The pronunciation and characters are organized according to their vowels, tones, and syllables. The dictionary contains 47,035 characters, making it one of the most important and authoritative documents for the study of Chinese characters, and the first Chinese character reference book in history to be named a "dictionary."
