User reviews
John GBC Lite is praised for smooth gameplay, good stability, support for both GB and GBC games, multiple save states, and an easy-to-use interface with efficient game detection. However, users commonly report intrusive and frequent ads disrupting gameplay, issues with save data loss, audio latency problems, inflexible button layouts causing gameplay difficulties, and compatibility problems with certain newer games. Despite these drawbacks, the emulator remains highly recommended as the best free Game Boy Color emulator available.
Pros
- Runs smoothly and is stable with few crashes.
- Supports both Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.
- Multiple save states with quicksave/load functionality.
- Easy to add and find games with directory scanning.
- Lightweight and does not consume much storage or data.
Cons
- Intrusive ads have become frequent, including video ads and pop-ups disrupting gameplay.
- Save data sometimes fails to persist or is lost after inactivity.
- Audio issues noted, including latency and beat skipping in some games.
- Button layout and controls are not customizable; certain button placements cause gameplay issues.
- Some games (especially from around 2000) show white screens and do not run properly.
Recent reviews
I used to have no problems with this emulator. I didn't mind the banner ads at all bc it was so good at keeping my place in game even when closed, and the ads stayed unintrusive. However, suddenly, I get full video ads almost every time I tab out of the app. While they are often quick skips, previously unintrusive ads are now totally intrusive and ruin the experience. Completely scummy way to try and force me to buy the full version.

For some reason it can't run some GB games past the year 2000 (I tried with FIFA 2000 and DBZ: Legendary Super Warriors but they both just gave me a white screen) but other than that it runs completely fine
