Listen to clips of Japanese speech, test your understanding, and improve your listening comprehension.

You can use this app to improve your understanding of spoken Japanese, and learn new words and phrases to add to your vocabulary.

---How it works---

1. Choose your Japanese level
2. Choose topics you want to hear about
3. Listen to a short 5-20 second audio clip
4. Type in your interpretation of what you have heard in your native language, to test your understanding, replaying the clip if necessary
5. AI grades your response for accuracy, and explains any words you have missed or misheard
6. You can ask the AI follow-up questions to clarify grammar concepts, phrases, and anything else you're unsure of
7. Repeat from step #3, and improve your Japanese listening comprehension
8. Use the "Word Review" section to keep track of new words and phrases, and things you've misheard - you might like to add these concepts to your Anki deck, if you use flashcards to study

---Who is this app for?---

This app is for Japanese learners looking to improve their listening comprehension.

It is designed for those who know at least some basic vocabulary already, but sometimes struggle to understand real-life spoken Japanese.

The app supports learners at beginner, N5, N4, N3, N2, and N1 levels.

It is not designed for complete beginners looking to begin learning Japanese from scratch. You need to be at the point where you are beginning to understand short, basic sentences.

For those at an N2 or N1 level, the app can help you test your understanding of more complex grammar concepts in more difficult subject areas such as finance, property, economics, and politics.

---Beginner example sentences---

- Japanese: おにぎりをください。おみずもください。
- Romaji: Onigiri o kudasai. Omizu mo kudasai.

- Japanese: こんど、いっしょにえいがをみませんか
- Romaji: Kondo, issho ni eiga o mimasen ka.

- Japanese: みずをのみます。すこしやすみます。
- Romaji: Mizu o nomimasu. Sukoshi yasumimasu.

---N3 example sentences---

Japanese: 最近、運動不足だから、週に二回くらいジムに行くようにしてるんだ。最初はきついけど、終わったあとに体が軽くなると、やっぱり行ってよかったって思う。
Romaji: Saikin, undou busoku dakara, shuu ni nikai kurai jimu ni iku you ni shiterun da. Saisho wa kitsui kedo, owatta ato ni karada ga karuku naru to, yappari itte yokatta tte omou.

Japanese: ねえ、今週の土曜日って空いてる？よかったら、新しくできたカフェに行かない？前からちょっと気になってて、もし時間あったらゆっくり話したいな。
Romaji: Nee, konshuu no doyoubi tte aiteru? Yokattara, atarashiku dekita kafe ni ikanai? Mae kara chotto ki ni nattete, moshi jikan attara yukkuri hanashitai na.

---N1 example sentences---

Japanese: さっき管理会社に連絡したんだけど、やっぱりあの水漏れ、すぐには直せないみたい。部品の手配が必要だから、早くても明後日って言われちゃった。まあ、ひどくなってるわけじゃないし、今日はバケツを置いて様子を見るしかないかな。ついでに、上の部屋の音のことも一応伝えておいたんだけど、ああいうのって言い方が難しいよね。角を立てたくはないし、でも我慢しすぎるのもよくないし。引っ越してから、こういう細かいことの調整ばっかりしてる気がする。

Japanese: さっき先方から修正のメールが来てたんだけど、やっぱり納期を一週間前倒ししたいみたい。こっちも他の案件が詰まってるから、そのまま全部飲むのはきついなと思って、今さりげなく調整できないか確認してるところ。たぶん会議で一回整理したほうが早いし、必要なら私のほうでたたき台を作っておくよ。

---Credit system---

Japanese Listening is currently free to use for all Japanese learners, up to a limit of 100 credits per day.

One credit is consumed per audio clip generated, and per follow-up question asked in response to a graded submission.

This allowance currently enables you to spend an hour or more practicing your Japanese verbal comprehension if desired.
