Features & Capabilities

The Competent as a Teacher app is intended to support the development of starting teachers.
The app contains the Dialogue Cards that have been developed within the Junior Teacher project of the AUAS and can be used as a reflection tool and as a guide during counseling discussions between a starting teacher and a supervisor, or between a student-in-training and a supervisor.
The app is based on 23 competences for starting teachers. These competences are organized around three domains: pedagogically competent, didactically competent and collegial cooperation.

Each competence is elaborated on two levels:
- at the initial teaching skills level (for use during training and in the first year after training).
- at the competent teaching level (for use in the first three years of teaching).

The screen contains three elements for each skill:

1. The intended result. For the initial proficient level, the result is aimed at the teacher's actions, for the proficient level the result is aimed at the effects of that action on the student.
2. Indicators are then mentioned that can contribute to the intended result. The indicators describe the visible action and the result of that action. These indicators are examples of the teacher's actions. In the competency descriptions, no distinction is made according to type of education, school subject or educational vision of the school. When using the maps, starters and supervisors can, if desired, give their own appropriate coloring to the indicators.
3. Finally, a number of reflection questions follow. The coach can use these questions in the reflection meeting. The reflection questions provide the opportunity to reflect on and have a discussion about the underlying knowledge, views, beliefs or identity. In this way, the reflection questions invite an open dialogue. The reflection questions are intended as a suggestion for this dialogue and can be supplemented with your own questions that match the situation and development questions of the start-up.

The app is intended for starting teachers, trainee teachers and their coaches / counselors, both in primary and secondary education.
